Nursing at UCSF began in the spirit of renewal after San Francisco's 1906 earthquake.
The first teaching hospital of the University of California opened its doors on April 11, 1907, fifty-one weeks after the great quake. Built by converting two floors of the UC School of Medicine, the 75-bed hospital stood above Golden Gate Park where less than a year before, volunteer nurses and doctors tended to the wounded and sick in a makeshift tent city. The top floor held a dormitory for student nurses; from the beginning, round-the-clock nursing was at the core of patient care. That same year, the Regents approved UC's first nursing education program. Students began earning nursing diplomas in 1907. The first bachelor's degree program for nurses in California began in 1917. In 1939 the Regents established the first autonomous School of Nursing in any state university. "The achievements of the UCSF School of Nursing - our national and world leadership in nursing education, research, and community service, our distinguished faculty and the remarkable accomplishments of our alumni - rose from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire," says Dean Kathleen Dracup, RN, FNP, DNSc.
The Nursing Centennial celebrations will honor the school's history, the accomplishments of alumni and faculty and the leadership of UCSF nurses throughout the world. UCSF Medical Center also plans celebrations of its 100th year, beginning in January, 2007 and recognizing the achievements of UCSF nurses and other staff. Nursing events begin with a campus-wide Centennial kickoff on September 13, 2006 (see news story/video). In the ensuing months, lectures and symposia will honor nursing scholarship and excellence. On Alumni Day, April 28, 2007, UCSF Nursing Press (website) will launch the first complete history of the School. (For preview chapters of the book by associate dean emerita Marilyn Flood, see "Looking Back" (lkgback.htm) and "Proclaiming Our Work a Science" (ourwrk.htm) from the School's Science of Caring magazine.) Our centennial observances will culminate in June 2007 with Graduation/Commencement events, a Doctoral Graduate Reunion and Symposia (see reunion website), and an evening Gala Celebration featuring Rita Moreno in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin St. Francis Hotel at Union Square (see gala website).
San Francisco celebrates the School of Nursing centennial with street banners nearby in the Sunset District and a floral display at the
historic Conservatory of Flowers (1879) in Golden Gate Park. Blood Drive - "100 Pints for 100 Years in 100 Days" (Also see: News Story) A CHALLENGE FROM THE DEANS The School of Nursing celebrates 100 Years of Excellence this year. In keeping with our long history of concern for communities, we will commit help to our local community, through a special program called "100 Pints for 100 Years in 100 Days."
