Faculty Practices

Located in and around San Francisco, our faculty practices allow us to serve the neediest people in our community, those normally underserved by more mainstream health care systems, including the homeless and mentally ill. The practices are also a vital educational resource for the Department because they provide invaluable opportunities for our students to train in actual community environments.

Our practices provide health services the some of the most vulnerable populations in our area. For example, the nurse-managed Glide Health Services (see link below) provides free medical care to the city's homeless and underinsured.

The faculty practice at Progress Foundation (see link below) gives residents of the Progress Houses access to medical care that eliminates costly emergency room visits.

The other practices each serve a special segment of the community.

Our six faculty practices are listed below. For more information on the individual practices, please visit our Faculty Practice Table. Also see the School of Nursing's Global Directory of Faculty Practice Resources.

What is
Faculty Practice?

Faculty practice includes all aspects of the delivery of health care through the roles of clinician, educator, researcher, consultant, and administrator.

Faculty practice activities within this framework encompass direct nursing services to individuals and groups, as well as technical assistance and consultation to individuals, families, groups and communities.

In addition to the provision of service, the practice provides opportunities for promotion, tenure, merit, and revenue generation.

A distinguishing characteristic of faculty practice within the School of Nursing is the belief that teaching, research, practice, and service must be closely integrated to achieve excellence.

Faculty practice provides the vehicle through which faculty implement these missions. There is an assumption that student practica and residencies as well as research opportunities for faculty and students are an established component of faculty practice.
