3. Getting Started in the Funding Search

3.1. First Steps

Congratulations on being proactive in thinking about how to fund your UCSF graduate education. It is wise to start this process well in advance of your first day as a student, before you have papers to write and lots of reading to complete.

It's best to apply for funds a year in advance of when you'll actually need the money; make that your mantra throughout graduate school.

The School of Nursing suggests you begin with one of the free databases, below, and consider using FastWeb [http://fastweb.monster.com/] or WiredScholar [http://www.collegeanswer.com/] to find additional opportunities which will be forwarded to your email address.

4. International Students:  Additional Information

With the support of the public (taxpayers), the University of California offers a superior graduate education at fee levels much lower than those charged by similar private and public schools and universities.

However, UC has very limited funding for international students. For further guidance students are directed to the Prospective Information for International Students [http://nurseweb.ucsf.edu/gateway/prosintl.htm] page, and to the UCSF International Students and Scholars Office [http://student.ucsf.edu/siss/]. The School of Nursing also provides special services to international students during their course of studies.

Most international students in the UCSF School of Nursing help offset their expenses by working as a research or teaching assistant. Students may also find employment within the UC system as a nurse or in another job classification. Students may compete for a limited number of UCSF fellowships that have no citizenship requirements. Good planning resources include the web sites of International Education Financial Aid [http://www.iefa.org] and/or International Federation of University Women [http://www.ifuw.org/].

5. MEPN Students:  Additional Information

Before beginning the MEPN program, the School of Nursing recommends that students apply for scholarships. This will lessen the student's debt burden during the more expensive first (pre-licensure) year of the program.

The scholarship application process can begin even before being officially accepted to UCSF. The funder may ask for verification of acceptance, which can be provided once the student is accepted into the MEPN program.
