Suzanne Dibble is Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Health & Aging and Physiological Nursing.  She received her doctoral education at the University of California, San Francisco.  Her research activities for more than a decade have been focused on the care of individuals with chronic illnesses.  That care may either be in elucidating knowledge about the potential for a chronic illness, such as breast cancer, or aiding individuals and their families with terminal care.  Symptom management has been a major focus throughout Dr. Dibble’s career.  In 1999, Professor Dibble founded the Lesbian Health Research Center, an international research center, specifically and uniquely concerned with health and wellness issues about lesbians, bisexual women, trans-gendered individuals, their families, and health care providers.

RECENT PROJECTS

Title: Treating Chemotherapy Induced Nausea with Acupressure
Project Period: 2001-2006
Funding Agency: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Description: Although the newer antiemetic agents have controlled a notable portion of the vomiting associated with chemotherapy administration, nausea continues to be a significant problem.  Therefore, the specific aims of this randomized clinical trial are to compare differences in the nausea experience and intensity among three groups (Total N=237) undergoing doxorubicin hydrochloride (Adriamycin®) and cyclophosphamide with or without fluorouracil chemotherapy for breast cancer.  The groups are those receiving a) usual nausea care plus “Active Acupressure” via finger pressure on the nei guan point (P6), b) usual nausea care plus placebo acupressure and c) usual nausea care.  Secondarily, the differences in quality of life, anxiety, and functional status among these group participants will be explored.

Title: Treating Chemotherapy Induced Nausea with Cannabinoids
Project Period: 2005-2006
Funding Agency: University of CA, Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research
Description: The specific aim of this pilot randomized clinical trial (n=80) are to ascertain the acceptability of the intervention to the participants including adherence to protocol; estimate our accrual potential; and estimate the effect size of this intervention in order to estimate sample size and statistical power for a larger trial.

Title: Smoking Relapse Among Lesbians: Negative Affect and Stress
Project Period: 2001-2005
Funding Agency: Kaiser Foundation Research Institute
Description:
This project is part of a multi-site study in which Dr. Dibble is responsible for the recruitment of participants, training of research assistants, development of statistical tests and instruments, an interpretation of findings.

Title: Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting
Project Period: 1999-2001
Funding Agency: Oncology Nursing Foundation
Description:
The purpose of this multi-site descriptive study is to determine the amount and patterns of nausea and vomiting in women diagnosed with breast cancer who are receiving chemotherapy.

Title: Cancer Prevention in Lesbians Over Age 60
Project  Period: 2000-2001
Funding Agency: A Fund of Our Own (Administered by the Horizons Foundation)
Description: The primary aim of this project is to prevent colon cancer by facilitating colon cancer screening in a group of lesbians over age 60.  Dr. Stephanie Roberts, a Family Practice physician and former Medical Director of Lyon-Martin Women’s Health Services, a clinic established to provide healthcare to lesbians, will create and deliver an educational program.  The program entitled “Cancer Screening Tests: What the Lesbian Over 60 Needs To Know”, will be presented to a total of 30 lesbians over age 60 over six months.  The sites are New Leaf Outreach to Elders (formerly GLOE) in San Francisco and East Bay Lavender Seniors in Alameda County.  The program, which will be approximately 1-1/2 hours in length, will review recommended screening tests for all cancers according to the standards of the U.S. Preventive Health Services Task Force and the American Cancer Society but will focus primarily on screening tests for colon cancer.  We will consider the program successful if half of the women have the appropriate colon cancer screening test (s).

Title: Differences in Breast Cancer Treatment: lesbian and Heterosexual Women
Project  Period: 1998-2001
Funding Agency: Gay and Lesbian Medican Association's Lesbian Health Fund
Description: There is some anecdotal evidence that lesbians may interact with the health care system differently than heterosexual women.  therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine differences in specific breast cancer treatment factors between lesbians and heterosexual women.

Title: Comprehensive Care Team: Management of the Beginning of the End of Life
Project  Period: 11998-2001 (M. Rabow, MD, Principal Investigator, S. L. Dibble, Co-Investigator
Funding Agency: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Description: The purpose of this clinical trial is to test the effectiveness of the CCT (Comprehensive Care Team) in the management of the beginning of the end of life care for those people with diagnosis of cancer, COPD, or CHF.
