Dr. La Plante is Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Institute for Health & Aging, where he has been employed since 1986.

Dr. La Plante received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University in 1985, and was a PEW Health Policy Fellow at UCSF from 1986-88. His research interests include conceptual and definitional issues in health and disability, the demography and epidemiology of health and disability, and health and disability policy and long term care.

Dr. La Plante is Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Personal Assistance Services, http://www.pascenter.org, which conducts national statistical studies on disability and personal assistance needs and is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

He has achieved nationwide recognition as a preeminent researcher and scholar in the field of disability and is known as well for his methodological skills in survey research, which he has applied in his research on disability and health topics.

Dr. La Plante has authored numerous statistical reports and abstracts on demographic, epidemiological, and socioeconomic aspects of disability, which have been published and disseminated by NIDRR, and has authored a variety of journal articles appearing in the Health Services Research, The Journals of Gerontology, Milbank Quarterly, the American Journal of Public Health, and others.
