Dear Colleagues,

It is with tremendous pleasure that I announce the new Associate Dean of Research in the UCSF School of Nursing, Dr. Kathryn (Kathy) Lee. Kathy will begin the position January 1, 2010.

Currently she holds the James and Marjorie Livingston Endowed Chair in Nursing and is the Director of the Nursing Research Training Program in Symptom Management.

Kathy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and currently is the Chair of a NIH National Institutes of Nursing Research study section. Her own highly successful program of research has focused on women's health with an emphasis on sleep patterns, circadian rhythms, and fatigue.

Kathy earned her MN and PhD at the University of Washington, but came to UCSF for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Nurse Scholars Program. Kathy is known for her fine mentorship of doctoral students, having been awarded Mentor of the Year by this group. She also has represented the School of Nursing in the mentorship program of the CTSI since its inception.

We are very grateful to Mary Blegen and to all the members of the Search Committee that Mary chaired. The Search considered several candidates over quite some time, but the committee's persistence and fortitude resulted in finding just the right person for this important position.

Let me take this opportunity to once again thank Dr. Geri Padilla for her eight years of service in this position prior to her recent retirement. She is handing over to Dr. Lee one of the most respected programs of research among schools of nursing in the country. I am very grateful to Geri for her many important contributions to the school and to Kathy for her willingness to assume this new and challenging role.

Please join me in congratulating Kathy.

Sincerely,

Kathleen A. Dracup, RN, FNP, DNSc, FAAN
Dean and Endowed Professor in Nursing Education
