Who Can Participate?
- Children and adolescents ages 8-21 with a diagnosis of
FH - Familial Hypercholesterolemia, or
FCH - Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia
(Diagnosis must be confirmed by blood cholesterol tests and positive family history and by a licensed physician.)
- FH - Familial Hypercholesterolemia:
Characterized by low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels > 130 mg/dL
and a parent with the disorder
- FCH - Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia:
Characterized by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels > 130 mg/dL
or triglyceride levels > 150 mg/dL or both,
and at least one parent presenting with any of these.
- Parental consent and child assent
(written permission from both parent and child/participant)
- Ability of the child to read and speak English
- Ability of one of the parents to read and speak English
- Access to a telephone
Who Cannot Participate?
- Mental or physical inability to participate in the study
- Allergy to the dietary supplements (pills) being used
- Any medical condition requiring chronic medication
- Current smoking status
