Reviews

The words "you need surgery" can provoke anxiety in anyone. This book, written by experienced surgical services nurses and educators, is designed to give prospective patients a guide to what to expect and what questions to ask when facing an operation.

Starting from the moment of diagnosis, the authors walk readers through general topics common to all in-patient treatment, including getting a second opinion; decoding insurance policies; understanding surgical procedures, anesthesia, and medications; preadmission testing (e.g., blood work, chest X-rays); discharge; and home care. The chapter on what to expect of a surgical experience from the time you enter the hospital through to the PACU [postanesthesia care unit] is exceptionally clear, thorough, and well written.

This book will be eagerly welcomed by the growing number of consumers who proactively take charge of their health. Recommended for public libraries and health collections.

This book represents an overview of the surgical process from diagnosis through recovery and home care. The authors state that the purpose is to provide the healthcare consumer with a "compendium" of information about surgery and all the components involved in the process. These worthy objectives are met quite well in this publication. This book is designed for the general reader and the language is at the appropriate reading level.

The authors are registered nurses with extensive experience in the surgical field and are therefore credible authorities on the subject. All aspects of the surgical process are covered, from admission to home healthcare. Legal issues such as advanced directives and informed consent are addressed. A very useful glossary is included and the resource list includes contact information for HCFA, Social Security, and an error reporting hot line.

The reference list is extensive and up-to-date. Surgical procedures are a frightening unknown for the healthcare consumer. In this book the authors describe exactly what to expect from diagnosis through recovery and everything in between. They provide insightful information about all the "sticky" issues such as choosing a physician, choosing hospital, and obtaining a second opinion. This is an excellent resource for people preparing to undergo a surgical procedure.
