Upcoming 2006-2007 financial aid deadlines:
Continuing students who wish consideration for the Full Funding option and will not attend a summer session have until March 3 to submit the FAFSA and UCSF financial aid application. Married students or single students with dependents are required to submit a signed copy of their 2005 federal tax return as well by this date.
Continuing students who are applying for Basic Funding have until May 5 to apply for aid. The May deadline applies to all students whether their first term of enrollment is summer or fall. Visit our website to view application instructions or contact Student Financial Services with questions.
Students who missed earlier the deadline for Full Funding starting in summer should still submit their 2006-2007 application materials as soon as possible. Student Financial Services will process any application submitted after stated deadlines, but cannot guarantee that grant funds will be awarded to late applicants.
Spring Quarter Check Disbursement:
In-person disbursement will take place March 23 as long as you are registered and don't have holds placed on your aid. Checks are disbursed at the satellite Accounting Office (MU, level G, room 3).
Visit our website (http://saawww.ucsf.edu/financial) for detailed information on student aid or contact our office: #MU-201-West, 415/476-4181.
New Federal Legislation Makes it Important to Consolidate Loans
Students should consolidate: it makes good economic sense to lock in low interest rates by July 1st - even if you consolidated last year.
Student Financial Services will offer advising workshops on this issue.
Congress just passed the Spending Reconciliation Bill (S.1932) that, among other things, guarantees that interest rates will zoom upward on July 1, 2006.
The confluence of the Reconciliation Bill's passage and the standing legislation regarding interest rates means students should consolidate all Stafford or Direct loans between this spring (after this year's loans are fully disbursed) and June 30. After July 1, interest rates on all outstanding non-consolidated federal Stafford loans will be fixed at 6.8 percent.
Consolidation loans have fixed interest rates based on the loans that are placed into consolidation, but current Stafford rates are only 4.7 percent, so consolidating yours loans is cheaper than repaying them at 6.8 percent! And students who already consolidated loans last year can consolidate their new loans.
Unfortunately, the inevitable sales pitches to get students to consolidate loans with particular lenders will also begin in earnest. Consolidation loans are good business from a banker's perspective, and everyone is going to be bidding for new loans. Some of these agencies are trusted partners, but some are "up start" companies that are formed specifically to locate potential customers and steer them toward a particular company. As in all solicitations, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Here's the bottom line: students should consolidate. It makes good economic sense to lock in low interest rates. But the process can't begin until after spring checks are disbursed, so nothing needs to be done immediately, except getting familiar with the process. In April or May, students should consolidate Stafford or Direct loans, avoiding the last minute crush (say, mid-June). Every student in the country should be doing the same thing.
Other changes are coming too. See the full article, from which this was excerpted, in Synapse: http://www.ucsf.edu/synapse/content/2906/loans.html

The UCSF Medical Center has put in place a policy regarding artificial nails for those health care workers involved in direct patient contact.
Artificial fingernail enhancements including artificial nails, tips, wraps, appliqués, acrylics, gels and any additional items applied to the nail surface will be prohibited for all health care workers with direct patient care contact.
Artificial nail enhancements contribute to nail changes that can increase the risk of colonization and transmission of disease microorganisms to patients.

Valentine's Day Party
The Nursing Student Council (NSC) would like to thank all of the students, faculty, and staff who attended the Valentine's Day Social on February 8th, 2006. The event could have not been such a success without of all those who attended!
Results from Student Survey
The Winter Qtr. 2006 NSC Student Survey results are currently being compiled. Many thanks to all School of Nursing students who participated and gave the NSC their comments! Students will receive an email with the results in early March. The survey results will also be placed in the NSC Bulletin Board in the School of Nursing, 2nd Floor, as well as in next month's Update.
Important Message Regarding the Graduate Students' Association
The NSC would like to remind students in the School of Nursing and Social & Behavioral Sciences that they are welcome to attend and become involved with the Graduate Students' Association (GSA). The GSA represents the students of the graduate programs at UCSF, including the students in the School of Nursing. The GSA serves to improve the quality of graduate student life, to represent diverse student needs, and to advocate for student rights and interests. School of Nursing students pay membership into the GSA through their fees and are encouraged to become active with this governing body. All students who attend GSA meetings are eligible to vote at GSA meetings. Your vote counts!
All nursing and SBS students are encouraged to attend GSA meetings and get involved with making and changing policies campus wide. GSA officer elections are held in June; any students interested in becoming involved in GSA as an officer (e.g., President, External Affairs Director, Finance Director, etc.) should begin attending GSA meetings. During Spring quarter, the NSC will begin holding information sessions regarding GSA and NSC positions.
To find more information regarding the GSA and the dates for their future meetings, which take place once a month at alternating campuses (Parnassus and Mission Bay), please refer to their website at: http://student.ucsf.edu/gsa/
