Research Program: Dyspnea across different illnesses. Correlates of dyspnea. Treatments to affect dyspnea in acute and chronic settings. Exercise as a treatment for dyspnea. Symptom Management (dyspnea) at end of life in lung disease.
Theoretical Focus: Physiological/psychological theories; desensitization; guided mastery. Methods: Quantitative and qualitative. Designs are descriptive, correlational, and randomized clinical trial. Instrument development as needed.
Current Projects: NIH funded research related to the effect of three exercise interventions on a) dyspnea intensity, distress, and anxiety; b) self efficacy; c) activities of daily living; and d) quality of life.
Pilot Study: Dyspnea at end of life in non-malignant lung disease.
