Dr. Chafetz's interests include severe mental disorders, substance use and medical problems that co-occur with psychiatric illness, homelessness, psychiatric emergency treatment, family caregiving, methods for studying course of psychiatric illness and for clinical trials testing psychosocial interventions. She is also interested in the impact of developmental issues on psychiatric illness and treatment throughout the lifespan, including young adults experiencing the onset of illness as well as older adults.
Dr. Chafetz's current projects include study primary care and medical self management interventions based on principles of psychiatric rehabilitation and empowerment. Services are adapted to complex needs of severely mentally ill adults and delivered within community mental health programs that serve as their major points of access to care. serves as a clinical supervisor, Wellness Training Program, located in the Oasis Self Help Program, San Francisco. She is Principal Investigator of the Wellness Project I where she supervised clinical nurse specialists providing services to help mentally ill adults acquire skills in self assessment and in management of general health issues. She has seen individual patients as needed as a back-up to staff and conducted weekly supervisory sessions using a case conference format.
