My program of research focuses on the impact of familial factors on Chinese and Chinese-American children's health, with an emphasis on obesity in school-age children. My research focuses on child-centered and family-oriented methods from a bio-behavioral model. It aims to develop culturally and developmentally appropriate intervention programs.
I recently completed a longitudinal study with Chinese children in Taiwan (ages 7 and 8) through a Pacific Rim Research Program at University of California. The goals of this research are to examine predictors of changes in BMI in early elementary school–age children in Taiwan.
My current projects include a study examining body composition, physical fitness and cardiovascular diseases risk factors in Chinese-American children (funded by School of Nursing) and a randomized clinical trail on overweight prevention intervention in Chinese-American children (funded by NIH Roadmap multidiscipline clinical research awards).
The purpose of body composition, physical fitness and cardiovascular diseases risk factors in Chinese-American children's study are to:
The aim of overweight prevention intervention in Chinese-American children is to examine the feasibility and efficacy of a child-centered and family-focused behavioral intervention on improving health behavior, psychosocial function, anthropometrics, and biochemical indices in Chinese-American children.
My teaching is focused on courses related children's health and on the research process; in particular, the designing, conducting, and implementing research utilization in nursing practice. This course provides advanced practice nurses in pediatric and neonatal nursing programs with skills to evaluate and utilize research findings related to pediatric/family health care. Research critique skills focus on assessing study designs, study methods, findings, conclusions, and clinical implications of relevant research articles. I have been a guest lecturer in the APPN program on the topics of culture and children's health.
