Research/Current Projects

My current program of research focuses on health and prevention issues of HIV infected individuals, with a special emphasis on quality of care for the urban poor and HIV positive drug users. My current projects include: HIV Intervention for Providers (HIP), Interventions for Seropositive Injection Drug Users: Research and Evaluation (INSPIRE), and Enhancing Prevention Programs Evaluation Center (EPPEC).

As part of the HIP study, our team has developed an intervention to train HIV primary care providers. This intervention is being evaluated through a randomized controlled trial design to evaluate the effectiveness of a 4-session HIV prevention intervention training compared to standard of care in HIV clinical training.

I serve as a Co-Investigator and Research Coordinator for the San Francisco site of a multi-site behavioral intervention study called INSPIRE (Interventions for Seropositive Injection Drug Users: Research and Evaluation). Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I have been part of a national team developing and launching a behavioral intervention clinical trial for HIV+ injection drug users. We are currently collecting 12 month follow up data and will continue with data collection through the end of 2004.

The EPPEC study which is a HRSA SPNS Initiative on Prevention with HIV Infected Persons Seen in Primary Care. EPPEC is an Evaluation and Support Center for the 15 funded demonstration sites. The mission of this Center is to provide leadership in the design and evaluation of interventions that will have maximum impact on the theory, practice and policy of HIV prevention in primary health care settings. This project is being conducted by a multidisciplinary team lead by the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) within the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Teaching

My primary teaching role in the School of Nursing relates to HIV and AIDS. I regularly teach one course offered as part of the HIV Minor offered in the Department of Community Health Services. Pacific AIDS Education Training Center. I continue to serve in the capacity of guest lecturer.

I am currently the Nursing Coordinator with the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (PAETC). The role of the PAETC is to train clinicians in the Pacific region on issues related to HIV care. The clinician audiences for these trainings include nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners and dentists.
