Dr. Dowling's research focuses on the effects of chronic progressive neurological diseases on circadian and rest-activity rhythm function in older adults and symptom management of these disturbances. She has a long-standing interest in exploring how non-pharmacological therapies (e.g., bright light exposure, melatonin) can improve rest-activity rhythms and quality of life in older adults, especially those with dementia.
She also recently received NIH funding to partner with Red Hill Studios to adapt the popular Nintendo Wii platform to create a therapeutic interactive game based on a classroom training program that has proven efficacy in improving gait and balance in people with Parkinson's disease. Methodologies are primarily quantitative and include measurement of physiological and psychosocial variables.
Dr. Dowling primarily advises and mentors students in the doctoral program but also teaches in the Gerontology Nursing Specialty Masters Program.
Dr. Dowling serves on a variety of public committees and boards that support patient education, advocacy, geriatric support services, health care maintenance and preventive services. Academically, her service primarily supports advanced nursing education and research.
