The primary goal of my research is to develop and test novel electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring strategies and to improve clinical practices for more accurate diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial ischemia.
I am the founder and Director of the Electrocardiographic Monitoring Research Lab located in the School of Nursing.
The lab serves as a core lab for multiple clinical studies conducted at UCSF, both in the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine, Division of Cardiology.
I am the principal investigator of two clinical trials
funded by the National Institutes of Health. The IMMEDIATE AIM Study (#RO1 HL069753) is designed to compare standard electrocardiography with body surfacing mapping in patients who present to the emergency department with chest pain. The ST SMART Study (#RO1 NR007881) is a county-wide randomized clinical trial to determine whether pre-hospital ST segment monitoring with trans-telephonic transmission to target hospital will reduce hospital time to treatment for acute coronary syndromes. Although the ST SMART Study has just begun, it has already garnered publicity which can be viewed at the following links:
News Article; Press Release.
I teach clinical electrocardiography courses to medical students, residents, and graduate nursing students at UCSF. I mentor doctoral students in research design and methods.
Professional Activities
I serve on the Board of Directors and am the President of the International Society of Computerized Electrocardiology (http://www.isce.org), whose membership is comprised of basic, clinical, and engineering scientists from around the world who are interested in the heart's electrical activity.
I am also actively involved with the American Heart Association (AHA) at the local, affiliate, and national level. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Western States Affiliate, which encompasses California, Nevada, and Utah. I serve on the peer review Research Committee for the Texas and Western States AHA Consortium
which awards research grants annually.
I chaired an AHA-sponsored scientific position paper entitled "Practice Standards for Electrocardiographic Monitoring in Hospital Settings." Learn more about implementation of the practice standard by going to the
"Taste of NTI" http://www.gehealthcare.com/nti web site.
I serve on the editorial board and/or am a manuscript reviewer for nine cardiology and critical care journals.
