M.S. Nursing, UCSF School of Nursing

Research/Academic Interests

My research over the past four years has focused on the impact of recent expansions in publicly funded health insurance coverage on the health of children living in low-income families. My specific focus has been on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and its contribution to reducing the number of uninsured children nationally and its impact on improving access to care and use of dental health care services.

My dissertation focused on patterns of access to care and use of health care services over time for the population of children previously uninsured. The published research contributes to a previous gap in knowledge about the health outcomes of children eligible for SCHIP and the growing evidence of the important contribution of publicly funded health insurance in covering the nation's children.

Teaching and Practice

Ms. Duderstadt has continued to teach the Pediatric Physical Assessment course for the pediatric specialty, and in the past three years, in collaboration with Elsevier Science, has completed the publication of a textbook on Pediatric Physical Assessment to be used as the core text for the course. The text has been adopted by Family and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs nationally as a core textbook for physical assessment.

Her teaching responsibilities have also included the Clinical Seminar series for first and second year students which focuses on the role development of the Advanced Practice Nurse and integrates clinical course work on pediatric physical assessment and diagnosis and clinical practice experiences.

Ms. Duderstadt returned to direct clinical practice in pediatric primary care in 2005. She cares for low-income, diverse populations of children and adolescents two days a week at San Francisco General Hospital Children's Health Center.

She also provides clinical supervision for Advance Practice Pediatric Nursing students.
