My program of research focuses on modifications in the workplace that may prevent or reduce the pain and fatigue of musculoskeletal disorders. My studies have investigated biomechanical, psychosocial and organizational work factors for their influence on musculoskeletal disorders, primarily of occupational origin, in agricultural, office, health care, and manufacturing settings. An additional line of study investigates factors influencing workplace accommodation and the return to productive work for workers who have sustained musculoskeletal injuries such as back strain.
My colleagues from the UC Agricultural Ergonomics Research Center and I have implemented and tested a series of engineering and administrative interventions that have proven effective in reducing farm workers' back and upper extremity symptoms and related ergonomic risk factors. Before any of these interventions could be implemented, we developed and tested linguistically and culturally appropriate strategies for symptom measurement, data collection, and worker participation. Our work has also provided much needed data on the symptoms and disorders of Latino farm workers. We continue to work with growers and workers in wine grape, commercial nursery, fruit tree, and field crop industries.
In the health care arena, Dr. Marion Gillen and I am investigating biomechanical and work organizational factors that influence musculoskeletal disorders among nursing staff in long term care. I am also collaborating with the State Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Worker Compensation, Managed Care Program, to identify ways to improve the quality of health care provided for injured workers.
