My research interests include sleep patterns in critically ill patients, pain and sedation in critical illness, and family presence at the end of life in critical care.
Principal Investigator on the "Accelerated Doctoral Program in Nursing," Betty Irene Moore Foundation, $9.7 million, 2004-2013.
Co-editor of the Ninth Edition of Critical Care Nursing: A Holistic Approach (Morton & Fontaine, in press 2008).
Critical care nursing is my specialty since 1972. CCRN Certification 1982-1992.

In addition to teaching leadership and academic role development to master’s and doctoral students, I teach how to create a healthy work environment to encourage patient safety and nurse retention, and communication and teamwork in hospital settings. I also present topics in critical care nursing such as sleep, non-pharmacologic approaches to sedation and family presence.
Served as the thirty-fourth President (7/2003 - 6/2004) [Immediate Past President (2004-05)] of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), the largest specialty nursing organization in the world.
