Teaching

My teaching activities have focused on four general areas: 1) formal courses; 2) seminars; 3) doctoral student advising and; 4) student teaching associated with my research projects.

The formal courses I have taught are courses for students matriculating for the Ph.D. in Sociology in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Nursing.

Seminars that I have taught include those presented at UCSF and UC Berkeley and have primarily focused on methodological or substantive findings derived from my research studies. I have also been on student dissertation and oral and qualifying exam committees, and have supervised and worked with post-doctoral fellows.

In these activities I participated in extensive discussions with students and fellows in helping them formulate research questions, directing them to resources relevant to their area of research interest, and spending substantial amounts of time discussing methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives of relevance.

Finally, I have spent significant amounts of time teaching students who have worked on my research projects, providing guidance and instruction in research design, project implementation, and proposal development.
