Academic Interests/Research Focus

My program of research focuses on acute injuries in the workplace, injury prevention and control, and work design issues that may facilitate prevention of injuries. My studies have investigated injury severity from construction falls, immediate and short-term effects of minor to moderate workplace injuries in municipal workers, family effects of workplace injury, best safety practice issues from the perspective of construction managers and workers, surveillance of sharps injuries in health care workers, and a comprehensive analysis of the bloodborne pathogens standard in California.

Current Projects

In conjunction with colleagues from the California Department of Health Services and University of California, Davis, we are in the final stages of analyzing multiples outcomes related to revisions of the bloodborne pathogens standard in California. We are looking at hospital compliance, nurses’ perception of their safety climate, needlestick injury rates, and the costs of maintaining a bloodborne pathogens program. In a related study, we are conducting focus groups with health care workers about needle safety devices.

In collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Medicine--Paul Blanc (PI), Robert Harrison, Ray Meister, and Ira Janowitz--and University of California, Berkeley, the team is evaluating socioeconomic and ergonomic factors in relation to outcomes in occupational musculoskeletal injury. In the long-term care arena, I am assisting Julia Faucett (PI) with an investigation of biomechanical and work organizational factors that influence musculoskeletal disorders among nursing staff in long-term care.
