Dr. Howie Esquivel's professional career has included a variety of roles and settings such as clinical nurse specialist, critical care educator, acute care nurse practitioner, and faculty. She is recognized for her clinical expertise in the care of cardiology and internal medicine patients. Her current clinical practice takes place with post-acute care patients. Dr. Howie Esquivel was the Director of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program from 2000·06. She is now the Vice·Chair for Clinical Academic Programs and Personnel.
Her research interests are focused on cardiovascular topics including factors associated with worsening heart failure and quality of life. She was awarded the Hellman Fellowship in 2003 and the Promise of Nursing Fellowship in 2004.
She was Principal Investigator from 2005-2006 for a study entitled "Predictors for Rehospitalization in Heart Failure." This was a clinical trial involving physiologic, functional and psychological measures involving risk for rehospitalization.
Her courses relate to diagnosis and treatment of selected medical problems and she also leads seminars for discussion of patient cases and management approaches. Teaching topics include cardiac assessment, hemodynamics, antibiotic therapeutics, and others.
She is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America, American Heart Association Cardiovascular Nursing Council, American Association of Critical Care Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau.

Dr. Howie Esquivel earned a Doctorate in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco. She is a board certified nurse practitioner in the specialties of Family and Acute Care.
