Research

My program of research focuses on investigating the quality of care of older people in the nursing home setting. Past studies have focused on the oral health care of nursing home residents, the treatment of acute illness in nursing homes, and weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration among nursing home residents. These interdisciplinary studies include co-investigators from the schools of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and the disciplines of speech pathology and nutrition.

Current Projects

Director, UCSF/John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence.

I am currently conducting an interdisciplinary study entitled, "An Ethnography of Dying in Long-Term Care Facilities."

Teaching

My areas of teaching include courses in the theory and clinical practice of gerontological nursing and qualitative research methodology.
