My program of research is focused on the impact of daily life events on children's development, specifically on the underpinnings to health in early childhood, from the perspective of self-regulation and motivation. Research efforts have been primarily in the pediatric behavioral field with an emphasis on young children under the age of eight. Recent studies are in the primary care area and examine risk-taking and its consequences.
My current US work includes: an NIH-funded intervention study examining television's influence on young Hispanic and Anglo children's health behaviors; the use of focus groups with young children; and preschool children's health behaviors in relation to maternal symptom management. Overseas: the influence of hospitalization on children, youth and families behavioral responses in Hong Kong and China.
Academic focus and teaching include both masters and Ph.D nursing students. I currently teach N238A (Infant and Child Development) and co-teach N257.01 (Assessment & Management of Pediatric Behavioral Problems).
