My research program explores midwifery practice from several aspects.
First, is the understanding the specific processes of care and how those are related to outcomes in the health of women and their families.
Second, is the examination of midwifery practice within the context of today's health care arena. . I have recently completed
data collection for a 3 year clinical trial on group prenatal care in the military health care setting funded by the TriService Nursing research program.
I use various methods to explore these issues including phenomenology, Delphi technique, metasynthesis, and ethnography. I also use several
analytic approaches to examine the discourse of labor and birth in the media.
Of particular interest is the use of film to gather and analyze data, as well as to disseminate knowledge to health professionals and consumers.

Teaching
As the coordinator of the nurse-midwifery specialty I work closely with the clinical faculty and students to assure a
rich array of courses that prepare graduates to be competent and scholarly clinicians.
I am involved in teaching students how to utilize research in clinical practice at the master's level, and advanced qualitative methods for doctoral students.
I also teach a course that explores disparities in women's health from feminist and cultural frameworks and guest lecture for courses on clinical and leadership.
