Research

Dr. Max's research focuses on the cost of illness methodology, and the economic impact of illness, injury and disability, the formal and informal care cost of Alzheimer's disease, and healthcare for the chronically ill and elderly.

She has extensive experience analyzing the economic burden on injuries and the effectiveness of interventions, including an economic evaluation of California's motorcycle helmet law, a study of the lifetime cost of all injuries in the U.S., an analysis of the cost of firearm injuries, and work on the economic impact of domestic violence.

Current Projects

Studies in progress on which I am Principal Investigator.

"Disproportionate Cost of Smoking for Communities of Color", Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP), 7/1/04 - 6/30/06. Wendy Max, Principal Investigator, $280,000. This study will develop models of smoking-attributable costs for African Americans, Hispanics, and all other people in California for 2002. Costs to be estimated will include health care costs, the value of time lost from employment and household production, and the value of lives lost prematurely. Models will take into account the impact of occasional smoking. Total and per person costs estimates will be developed. The study will have an advisory panel comprised of members of African American and Hispanic community organizations. These panelists will advise us on the application of the models and will help us to disseminate the findings to other community members.

Other Current Research on which I am a Co-Investigator.

"Smoking Cessation and Medical Care Use/Costs in a Large HMO", California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, 07/01/03-6/30/06. Hai-Yen Sung, Principal Investigator, $137,356. The goals of this study are to examine the association between the use of smoking cessation programs and smoking behavior and to assess the excess medical care use and costs of smoking among members of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Northern California.

"UCSF/John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence", John A. Hartford Foundation, 1/1/01 - 12/31/05. Jeanie Kayser-Jones, Principal Investigator, $1,330,754. This Center is devoted to training geriatric nurses for the 21st century. My role is to assist with the development of the postdoctoral program and with mentorship of pre- and post-doctoral training opportunities for these nurses.
