My program of research focuses on the evaluation of the deleterious effects of unrelieved pain and the development of strategies to improve the management of pain. Additional areas of interest include an investigation of the interaction between and among symptoms (e.g., pain, fatigue, depression, and sleep disturbances); an evaluation of gender differences in responses to analgesic medications, an evaluation of symptom trajectories in patients with cancer; an evaluation of symptom trajectories in family caregivers of patients with cancer; an evaluation of inter-individual variability in symptom experiences; and the genetics of symptoms.
The purpose of study #1 is to evaluate for gender differences in responses to mu-opioid analgesics, placebo, and combinations of mu- and delta-opioid analgesics using a dental model of postoperative pain.
The purpose of study #2 is to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and impact of neuropathic pain and lymphedema in women undergoing breast cancer surgery. For women who develop neuropathic pain, they are offered enrollment in a randomized clinical trial of a topical lidocaine patch. In addition, the genetics of neuropathic pain and lymphedema will be evaluated in these women. Patients enrolled in this project will be followed for up to five years following breast cancer surgery.
The purpose of study #3 is to evaluate for symptom clusters and to evaluate for subgroups of oncology patients who have different symptom experiences using cluster analysis.
The purpose of this study #4 is to evaluate for changes over time in pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances in military personnel who suffered a traumatic injury in Afghanistan or Iraq.
The purpose of study #5 is to develop and test a method to conduct gene expression studies from oral mucosal cells.
The purpose of study #6 is to test the effectiveness of two different doses of a psychoeducational intervention to improve cancer pain management.
