Research

Primary research focus is on how adults marshal their social and psychological resources to adapt to difficult life circumstances, such as chronic illness, institutionalization, and bereavement.

Current Projects

Co-Investigator, Perceived AIDS Stigma: A Multinational African Study, NIH, TW006395 (PI: Holzemer), 07/01/03 - 7/30/2008. Goal: To develop and validate culturally appropriate measures of perceived HIV/AIDS stigma for persons living with HIV/AIDS and nurses in 5 Sub-Saharan African countries; to analyze relationships over time among stigma, quality of health care, and quality of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS and for nurses.

Co-Investigator, Daily Depressive Affect & Disease Management in Diabetes, NIDDK, R01 DK061937 (PI: Fisher), 07/01/03 - 06/30/2006. Goal: Uses daily telephone interviews to examine the daily variation among depressive affect, disease-management and glycemic control over 21 days in people with type 2 diabetes.

Co-Investigator, Depression, Self-Management and Ethnicity in Diabetes, NIDDK, R01 DK062732 (PI: Fisher), 07/01/03 - 06/30/2007. Goal: A multi-year longitudinal study to describe the natural course of depression and self-management over time among of Latinos and European-Americans.

Co-Investigator, Center for Personal Assistance Services, NIDDR, H133B031109 (PI: Harrington) 07/01/03 - 06/30/2008. Goal: To study issues facing the availability and quality of services provided by formal and informal caregivers personal attendants to people who need help with activities of daily living.

Statistician, Changing Sexual Behavior in Gay Male Repeat HIV Testers, NIMH, R01 MH065138 (PI: Dilley), 2/01/02 - 1/30/2005. Goal: Randomized control trial of a new counseling intervention to reduce high risk sexual behavior among a cohort of gay and bisexual men with a history of high risk sexual behavior.
