Research

My research focuses on assessing and treating pain in critically ill and injured patients. My work emphasizes assessment and treatment of post-operative and procedure-related pain as well as acute pain in ICU and Emergency Department patients. My research program has also evolved to include symptom management of dying ICU patients.

Teaching

I am Co-Director of the Critical Care/Trauma specialty area in the master's program. Teaching these students provides me the opportunity to mentor future advanced practice nurses who will make significant contributions to patient care. I value the importance of communicating knowledge that is both theory- and practice-based and maintain my own clinical currency by practicing in ICU on a monthly basis.

Professional Activities

I enjoy my active involvement in many professional organizations including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the Emergency Nurses Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Pain Society.

Recently, I have been lead investigator on an AACN-supported multi-site study of procedural pain, known as the Thunder II Project.
