Ms. Schapiro's professional career includes over 30 years in nursing, specializing in the care of children and adolescents for over 25 years. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, Ms. Schapiro has worked in school-based health centers and teen clinics, currently practicing at Valencia Health Services (website), the School's nurse-run pediatric clinic in San Francisco's Mission District, where she developed and staffs teen drop-in hours.
Ms. Schapiro has taught at UCSF since 2000, and has received two student-generated teaching awards: Excellence in Teaching (2003) and Class Marshall (2004). She currently teaches a pediatric health promotion course and two pediatric pharmacology classes, all of which include a mix of classroom time and web-based modules. In addition to academic conferences, Ms. Schapiro regularly teaches community continuing education classes on child abuse, adolescent development and confidentiality, pediatric pharmacology and motivational interviewing techniques.
Her research interests include immigrant health and family reunification for Latino parents and children who have been separated during immigration. As a doctoral student, she has been awarded the Dean's Graduate Health Sciences Fellowship for the past two years.
Ms. Schapiro has published over 14 articles and book chapters in the areas of adolescent health, mental health, immigrant mental health, and physical assessment. She received the Leah Harrison Excellence in Clinical Writing Award, Journal of Pediatric Health Care in 2005 for her article on bipolar disorders. She is on the Editorial Board of Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care.
