My research focuses on improving the health care and health care outcomes of incarcerated populations and those at high risk for incarceration, such as the homeless, injection drug users, the severely mentally ill and new/undocumented immigrants. There are considerable barriers to studying incarcerated populations, and yet this population is at great risk for adverse outcomes and complications of failed therapeutic regimens.
Much of my research has been in infectious diseases, in particular tuberculosis, HIV, and hepatitis C, but also includes health promotion and disease prevention and health services access and use in these populations. The goal of this research is to identify factors that influence outcomes -- including system, provider, and individual characteristics -- and to test interventions to affect change and improve health and social outcomes in this population.
This work includes collaborations with faculty in departments across the UCSF campus and in universities outside the UC system, close working relationships with medical and nursing personnel and officials in San Francisco and Santa Clara county jails and the California Department of Corrections, and work with community-based organizations.
I direct the SHIP (Studies on the Health of Incarcerated Populations) program, and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team with over a decade of experience in research, teaching, clinical expertise and mentorship with scholars and students interested in this area of study.
