Financial Aid Overview for Nursing Students

Financial assistance programs available to nursing students include loans, scholarships, grants, traineeships, fellowships, and employment opportunities. Many programs are available through the Student Financial Services Office (SFSO), while others are administered by the School of Nursing and by the Graduate Division.

Nursing students in the doctoral programs may obtain information about graduate support from the Graduate Division website at http://saawww.ucsf.edu/graduate/fees.htm (website).

Financial aid programs offered through Student Financial Services include loans, scholarships, grants, and work-study. Some aid programs are "need-based" (targeted at disadvantaged/low-income students), while other aid programs use different selection criteria.

Aid funds can be limited and are awarded to students who demonstrate need according to federal need analysis criteria. Eligibility is based on the principle that financial responsibility for meeting educational costs rests with the student and family. Therefore, student resources and assets are considered in determining eligibility for these types of financial aid.

For students under 30 years of age, UCSF requires parents' financial information in order to consider students for the most favorable types of aid (grants, scholarships, and loans with the lowest interest rates). Exceptions are made for students who cannot provide parental information due to adverse family situations.

The parents' financial situation does not affect eligibility for funds but helps determine the type of aid offered.

Students who are under 30 and wish to apply only for loans and limited grant assistance are not required to submit parental information. Eligibility for many sources of financial aid is based partially upon earnings. When the school year income will be significantly lower than shown on the prior year's tax return, the Student Financial Services Office (SFSO) may base financial aid eligibility on estimated school year earnings. Students must submit their information to SFSO. Exceptions are handled on a case-by-case basis. Students who expect to maintain a significant level of earnings, but who need financial assistance to return to school, can generally obtain an unsubsidized student loan.

Some aid sources described below are not based on need as determined by Student Financial Services and do not require parents' information even for under-30 students. These sources include non-need-based scholarship funds, the Acute Care Nursing Scholarship Program, Nonresident Tuition Scholarships, traineeships, emergency assistance, and veterans' benefits. These programs are mentioned below.

International Students
Eligibility for most forms of financial aid is limited to U.S. citizens and to permanent residents of the United States. Prospective students from other nations should read the Information for Prospective Students from Other Countries bulletin; and also should consult (well before initial enrollment) with the UCSF International Students and Scholars Office.

Eligibility for many sources of financial aid is based upon earnings. When the school year income will be significantly lower than shown on the prior year's tax return, the Student Financial Services Office (SFSO) can base financial aid eligibility on school year earnings. Students must submit their information to SFSO and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Students who expect a comparable level of earnings but who need financial assistance to return to school can generally obtain an unsubsidized student loan.

Some aid sources described below are not based on need (as determined by Student Financial Services) and do not require parents' information--even for under-30 students. These sources include non need-based scholarship funds, the Acute Care Nursing Scholarship Program, traineeships, emergency assistance, and veterans benefits. These programs are mentioned below.

Selective Service Registration - Male Students Age 18-25

In order to receive financial aid from federal or state programs, male students (including US permanent residents) must be registered with Selective Service if they are 18 through 25. Failure to register when required to do so may result in denial of financial aid eligibility. For additional information, visit the Selective Service on the Internet at:  http://www.sss.gov.

Application and Deadline Information

To obtain information and/or an application packet for the financial aid programs available through the Student Financial Services Office, contact that office as follows:

By completing the UCSF financial aid application packet, students are automatically considered for all the programs administered by the Student Financial Services Office.

Continuing students should submit application materials in early February each year.
