The 2007 Mary Starke Harper Lecture was presented by Shirley S. Chater, RN, PhD, FAAN. In 2000, the AAN named Dr. Chater a Living Legend.

At UCSF, Dr. Chater served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 1977·82. She was Commissioner of the United States Social Security Administration (1993·97), and has contributed her significant consultative wisdom to the UCSF/John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence since its inception.

The indelible wisdom and grace of these proven legends is an invaluable gift to our future nurse leaders. Building on the strength of past leaders supports the promise within the next generation of nurses.
