About the School

Message from the Dean

Kathleen Dracup, Dean, photo

More than ever before in its 100-year history, our mission is clear and pressing.

California and the nation are desperate for highly skilled advanced practice nurses, nursing faculty, and health policy leaders, and we are strategically positioned to prepare this cadre of professionals. In the last 5 years alone we have tripled our research funding, gained additional scholarship support for our students, and increased our enrollment to foster the preparation of new nurses and new faculty for the state of California and beyond. The UCSF School of Nursing is uniquely poised to offer leadership and meet today's challenges.

Public service is a central tenet of our mission and, in countless new and exciting ways, each and every day, we are serving the needs of the people of this state in inner-city and rural clinics, health care facilities, and community organizations. We are committed to increasing diversity among healthcare practitioners and honoring the unique differences of the people we serve.

We invite you to join our family and share in our passion.

Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNSc, FNP, FAAN
Dean, UCSF School of Nursing

IOM logo

Associate Dean of International Programs and Professor Bill Holzemer (below, left) is the latest UCSF School of Nursing faculty to be inducted into the Institute of Medicine. This is an amazing honor for both Bill as well as for the School.

Wm. Holzemer, photo

The IOM serves as the official advisory committee to the U.S. President and Congress on matters of health care. Bill's nomination and election are in recognition of his outstanding work as a researcher and leader in health care. IOM members represent many different disciplines as physicians, nurses, basic scientists, economists, psychologists, etc. All are recognized as stellar scholars and leaders.

Bill will be our School's eighth faculty member in the Institute of Medicine--a record unequaled by any other School of Nursing.
