Schedule of Genomics Courses

This schedule is intended for 2007-08 and is subject to change.

The Minor in Genomics requires completion of all four courses below (8 units).

Dual Major in Genomics--available for Dept. of Physiological Nursing specialities:  Cardiovascular, Oncology, and Gerontology--requires additionally N404 Clinical Residency (6 units) focusing in genomics.

FALL:
N294A  Introduction to Human Genomics  (3 units) Wednesdays 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.  
Instructors: Brad Aouizerat, PhD
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course focuses on the history of genetics, basic human and molecular genetics, an introduction to genetic variation (SNPs, etc.), patterns of inheritance, multifactorial inheritance and common diseases, influences of gene action and expression, clinical cytogenetics, the Human Genome Project, genetics terminology, and molecular biology laboratory methods.
 
N407  Molecular Biology Laboratory Practicum  (1 unit)

Description: This course includes common molecular biology methodologies used in testing clinical samples for genetic mutations or clinically relevant biomarkers.

N294B  Medical Genetics for Nursing   (3 units) Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.   
Instructors: Mary B. Engler, PhD, RN, MS
Prerequisites: N294A or consent of instructor
Description: This course addresses the genetic basis of human diseases (Cardiovascular, Oncology, and Gerontology); genetic screening and diagnosis; ethical, legal, and social implications related to genetic information and technology; ethnic, racial and cultural considerations for providing genetic services; and genetic therapeutics such as, pharmacogenetics, gene therapy, stem cell transplants, enzyme replacement.
 
N407  Practicum in Family History-Taking and Pedigree Analysis  (1 unit) TBA   
Instructors: Nicola Stewart, MS, CGC
Prerequisites: None
Description: Students will practice the skill of obtaining and analyzing family pedigrees to identify possible familial predisposition to genetic illness. Case finding of individuals and families who warrant referral for gene testing or genetics counseling is a primary focus.
